Game Recap

The Chicago White Sox turned a four-run third inning into a 5-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians, weathering a shaky finish to hold on at the end.

Cleveland struck first, pushing across two runs in the opening frame, but Chicago answered immediately with a run in the bottom of the first and then broke through with four in the third to seize a 5-2 lead. That was all the offense the White Sox would need, as their pitching staff blanked the Guardians from the second inning through the eighth.

Neither lineup found much rhythm. Chicago managed just six hits and Cleveland only five, with both teams leaning heavily on free passes — the White Sox drew nine walks, the Guardians eight. Strikeouts piled up as well, 10 by Cleveland's hitters and nine by Chicago's, in a game that featured far more traffic on the bases than clean contact.

The Guardians finally broke through again in the ninth, scratching out a single run to cut the deficit to two, but they could get no closer. A Cleveland error in the field and the club's .167 team average told the story of a night when opportunities were plentiful and conversions were not.
